It's Palm Sunday!
If you are like me, you worshipped today and waved your palm in commemoration of what Christians refer to as the "Triumphant Entry". This is the day where shouts of HOSANNA rang out as Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. The people laid their cloaks on the ground and waved palms as Jesus comes to town for what would be his final passover and eventual crucifixion. This day is believed to be the fulfilment of messianic promise by prophet Zechariah where it is written: "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey". (9:9)
But while his entry is in the forefront of the celebration, in the background on this same day, were plots to kill him, indignation at his actions and public rebuke. It is a poignant reminder that this day is quite similar to our own. It is a day where shouts of "Hosanna" holds within it the tension of Celebration and Suffering. The expression of adoration and praise was at the same time a cry for deliverance: SAVE US NOW!
As we enter Holy Week, may we do so mindful of this tension. Some are celebrating AND suffering. On Palm Sunday, Jesus also turned over tables in Temple; healed a blind and lame man and prepared for Passover knowing he would be betrayed. He reminds me that whether in celebration or with suffering, the purpose of God must still advance.
Lord strengthen us for the journey ahead knowing the Hosanna we cry today will soon become Hallelujah!
P.S. Thank you so much for your prayers and encouragement during this bout of walking pneumonia. They strengthen me!
Blessings to you!
